Spring Bridge Tour: Knox County bridges and bridge company presentation and exhibit.
Meeting place: Riverside Park, 955 West High St. (SR 36), Mt. Vernon. Turn at Dike Street off SR 36 just east of the bridge crossing the Kokosing River.
Tour is caravan style. All are welcome to attend. Meet at Riverside Park, 955 West High Street (SR 36), Mt. Vernon. Turn at Dike Street off SR 36 just east of the bridge crossing the Kokosing River. Lunch will be at Southside Diner, so bring lunch money instead of a cooler.
Tour highlights: major stone-arch bridge; turn-of-the-century railroad truss; 1872 Wrought Iron Bridge Company bowstring; 1906 pony truss by Mt. Vernon Bridge; Pittsburgh Plate Glass history displays at Ariel Park; visit to the Knox County Museum, where we will hear a presentation on the Mt. Vernon Bridge Company and have an opportunity to explore the museum displays on the bridge company; Mt. Vernon’s dog fountain; the city’s distinctive residential architecture; and Moundview Cemetery.
For those interested, a 20-minute trip can be made to the Cooke Road Bridge, built in 1896. It is among Ohio’s earliest concrete bridges and is scheduled to soon be replaced.
